I’ve listened to these people says this is a “dangerous” topic for discussion and then they sit on their butts by doing nothing to help. This has been going on for years! Well I’ll take the heat gladly. I’ve seen too many die from this disease so I will tell you what turned me around and helped me become an more effective sponsor for those who asked for help.

I don’t speak for Alcoholics Anonymous. No one does. What I will be doing here is sharing the effective method pointed out in the Big Book and the experiences learned from 12 Step calls over a 30 year period. This is a guide to prepare a person in recovery for the job of helping another by following the path laid out by our Big Book of Recovery and depending on a Higher Power.

Sugar Plums Dance In This Book

In the interest of full disclosure, I want to share that by Bruce Moody's generosity of spirit, he describes me as editor of this little treat for the simple act of having spotted a typo or two just before it was published. I am receiving no compensation or other benefits by reviewing this book other than the hope that I'll help spread a bit of holiday cheer by introducing others to a fine book.

On his author page, Moody announces "I love to write!" And that love of writing is exclaimed, proclaimed, and shouted from the treetops of each word and especially each pause in this sweet gift of a book. But what is it about "Christmas Day" that has moved me to write a review of this nostalgic child's adventure when I am generally content to quietly read my naughty secrets -- the post-apocalyptic imaginings of a Justin Cronin or Sean Platt and David Wright? I've been mulling over that question and I think it is precisely because this little book conjures the very worlds cherished and lost post-apocalypse in the other books that are my steady diet.

I can imagine reading "Christmas Day" aloud during family holiday time. Only having a cat, what I can say for certain is that I love to read, not just books or stories, but, when written well, the phrases, words, and silences they contain. This is such a song of a book, just asking to be read aloud for the sheer enjoyment of the feeling of words in your mouth and their sounds in your own and your family's (or cat's) ears. It's just plain fun. And the book does have an engaging plot and a lovely moral well worth a family conversation. Thankfully, it's one of those "children's" books grown-ups are meant to enjoy.

I will mention a final bit about the book that adds a surprising depth to it that can enrich your time spent reading it as a family. As a nostalgic story that verges on being a period piece, albeit of the very recent past, it contains occasional references, words, and word usages that may jar adults (and did jar me) and be mysterious for the young. These moments can make for some of the richest opportunities among many offered by "Christmas Day In The Morning" to talk and connect and reflect as a family. Although I borrowed the book from the Lending Library, I would have gladly paid full price for it. Now I just have to find someone to read it to.

A piece of nostalgia

A nostalgic piece for all who have waited with anticipation for Christmas morning. Mr. Moody is an amazing wordsmith. This type of story is not my normal fare, but I was impressed with the writing style. It made me remember sleeping in the same room with seven siblings all anxious for the morning. Well done.

Bruce Moody recounts a Christmas morning many, many decades ago with staggering clarity. With poetic writing and abundant humor, he recaptures exactly what it feels like to be a kid on Christmas morning. It's sort of a perfect mix between Jean Shepherd's "A Christmas Story" and E L Doctorow's amazing "World's Fair".

J. H. Stape is Research Fellow at St Mary's University College, Twickenham, London and has taught at universities in England, Canada, France and the Far East. Author of The Several Lives of Joseph Conrad (2007), he has edited several of Conrad's texts and is co-editor of Conrad's collected letters (Volumes 7 and 9). He has also published on E. M. Forster, William Golding, Thomas Hardy, Frank Harris, Angus Wilson and Virginia Woolf.

A Great Conrad Companion

The series "Cambridge Companions" is somewhat uneven. Some titles are excellent, and others are inaccesible, tedious and really not "Companions" at all. This "Companion", however, to Joseph Conrad is probably one of the best in the series.
Beginning with a short biography of Conrad's life, there follow chapters on the short fiction, and several on most of the important of Conrad's works, such as "Heart of Darkness", "Lord Jim", "Nostromo" and "The Secret Agent". These are followed by sections on his late novels, Conradian narrative, his influence, and others. All of the Chapters are written in closed essay form by leading Conrad scholars, are easy to read, and well documented with footnotes. The final chapter includes a fairly comprehensive bibliography that wil be most helpful for students and scholars alike. It will provide a good starting point for further research.
If you are interested in Joseph Conrad, beyond reading his novels and short stories, then this book will be very helpful. I recommend it highly.

TRAVELLING WITH CAPTAIN CONRAD

Joseph Conrad is not only a Great Master of English literature, but also a man who wandered all over the world, by sea and land, producing for our delight a treasure of short stories as intense as novels, as well as a dozen novels as engaging as fairy tales. For some readers he is above all a writer of "sea stories", for others a creator of fabulous adventures; for many, an intuitive connoisseur of the human soul who gave birth to unforgettable characters. But there is more: Joseph Conrad inhabits his books, he is a friend who shows us a path, gently spelling out about a period in human history. He talks to the intelligence and the emotions. The bunch of essays of this wonderful companion, by the Cambridge fellows, gives us precious hints for travelling with Captain Conrad through the labyrinths and waves of the physical and virtual planet in which chance has placed us to live and die.

Very complex book

First off, this book is not meant for the average reader. This is definitely a college level book. I would not recommend this book to everyone, but only to people who are extraordinarily interested in Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness. The most important themes are discussed with essays and interpretations by various authors. The important thing is that multiple viewpoints are taken which is important for a controversial book like Heart of Darkness. In short, I would only suggest it to people who are extremely passionate about this book and the various themes such as Imperialism, racism, and morality presented therein.
