A near-perfect mystery--perhaps Mankell's best

This is, simply, a fantastic book, perhaps Mankell's best ; in fact it could be placed in the running for best overall mystery in a quite a while. There is a better balance than usual between character study and using that to build a mystery that is exciting right up to the end. The writing is excellent and I was actually a bit sad when this novel ended--despite its substantial length. I really cannot find any meaningful criticisms so I'll fall back on a trivial one: Mankell is a bit heavy on weather forecasts and using them to predict the nature of the upcoming day. with regard to progress in the case.--that's how vanishingly small my criticisms would be. A wonderful mystery.

Chasing a Faceless Killer...

Author Henning Mankell's Kurt Wallander mysteries are best-sellers in Europe. "One Step Behind" is the fifth of the series to be translated and published in the United States.

A faceless killer efficiently dispatches three young people celebrating Midsummer's Eve in a nature preserve near the seaside Swedish town of Ystad. Detective Kurt Wallander, divorced, suffering from a potentially serious health issue, and on the verge of career burnout, is thrust into the middle of a calculated crime spree by a savage serial killer. The story deepens with the brutal murder by shotgun blast of Wallander's colleague Svedberg. It is Wallander who will make the intuitive connection between the two crimes, leading the overworked police on a chase in which they always seem one step behind the killer. Wallander will risk professional ruin and death to finish the job.

As with other Kurt Wallander novels, this story is an intricately plotted police procedural, played out in a Sweden beset with social rot. Wallander himself continues to be a compelling character, a candidate for the hospital or the psychiatrist's couch if it were not for his dogged determination to see his job through. "One Step Behind" is very highly recommended to English-language fans of the Kurt Wallander novels.

A Slow Search

A long journey of searching for a killer, the searchers only slowly uncovering that person. Our hero's health seemed always a problem, leaving some skepticism as to his ability to perform physically. Lots of characters.And at times the book seemed to drag a bit.
