Back to those haunting days in Italy in 1944, at the foot of Mount Vesuvius, with lava running in great red rivulets down the slope towards us, and Jock taking a drag on his cigarette and saying, 'I think we've got grounds for a rent rebate.'
The fifth volume of Spike Milligan's unsurpassed account of life as a Bombardier in World War Two sees our hero dispatched from the front line to psychiatric hospital and from there to a rehabilitation camp. Considered loony (and 'unfit to be killed in combat by either side'), he becomes embroiled in his own private battle with melancholy. But it is music, wit and a little help from his friends - including one Gunner Harry Secombe - that help carry him through to his first stage appearances ...

A great and very funny read!
By Iain Sloan
This is volume 5 in Milligan's extremely funny war memoirs. If you've never read a book that's made you laugh out loud, then you will reading this. Milligan's view on war is clearly stated in the book but his humor always shines through. A look at life from a long gone era by one of Britain's greatest funny men. You can see where the Goon humor was nurtured in these books. If you are a Goon fan, a Milligan fan or indeed a British comedy fan, then this series of books are something you just can't not read.
I first read this series of books in my late teens. 30 years later I'm still reading them, new copies of course.
Has to be the only books I've ever read that have had me crying with laughter and unable to get a breath. Don't believe me? Read it for yourself.

By Paul H Janisch
Spike must have had some contractual obligation to fulfill when he wrote this. It is a long list of his immediate post-war experiences. When he runs out of things to write he puts in illegible documents. Read the first four books, they're better
